The Day Her Head Sailed Out to Sea
I am generally thought of as optimistic and outgoing in
my personal relationships. People have often commented
on the contrast between the apparent sadness in some of
my works and my real-life social self. This unmoored
little piece seems to express an underlying grief I haven’t
wanted to dwell on, involving the loss of my mother and
some fragmenting in our family, as well as splintering in
communities all around us. Although my inner psyche
longs to detach and float away, she does carry some
potential for new life and hope. I’d like to keep the port
open for her return.
