Layers of Time

In 1998 I began working at Conservation Northwest. It was in the middle of the Loomis campaign. CNW was working to raise $13.1-million to protect the Loomis State Forest, critical habitat for endangered Lynx. Towards the end of 1998 I visited the forest and hiked in the Chopaka.

Years later I stumbled on a lodge on Palmer Lake and since then, I’ve stayed there with family three times. In the distance you can see Chopaka peak. During one visit I hiked up to the Chopaka.

Across the water from the lodge there’s no lights, no people. Simply wilderness. When the light starts to fade the hills become silhouettes in shades of blue and at that moment it’s one of my favorite places in the world. I’m often there with the people I love best in the world. And while there I’m always struck by the decades of memory and experiences I have in that place: layers of time.
